Bahrain, Kuwait, Morocco back Saudi attack on Houthis
Tue, 10 Nov 2009 14:38:25 GMT
Bahrain, Kuwait and Morocco have expressed their support for Saudi Arabia in attacking Houthi fighters in northern Yemen.
In a letter to Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, Bahrain King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa said it was "good news" that the Saudi forces attacked Houthi fighters.
"Bahrain throws full weight behind Saudi Arabia, backing all measures" to defeat Houthis.
"Any assault on Saudi Arabia's security is an assault on Bahrain's, for we are a single country and nation," he said.
Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed al-Sabah also backed the Saudi incursion into Yemen territories, saying his country "stood by Saudi Arabia" in fighting the Shiite fighters.
Morocco also has announced its support for Riyadh's attacks on Houthis, expressing "absolute solidarity" with the country.
Rabat condemned what it called "military attacks" carried out by the Houthi group in Saudi territory, calling it "blatant aggression against the sovereignty, security and stability of Saudi Arabia and its territorial integrity."
Saudi Arabia launched air strikes on the northern Shiite fighters last week on the pretext that the fighters crossed the border. On Friday, Houthis said they had captured several Saudi soldiers.
Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdel-Salam said earlier on Monday that Saudi Arabia was using phosphorous bombs in the offensive.
White phosphorous can cause severe burns and its use against targets located among civilians is prohibited under an international law.
